The center faces a number of constraints that hinder its growth:
Low purchasing power of the population, which has led the center to offer free consultations, and the direct consequence is;
Deficit in the center’s finances, resulting in difficulties in covering fixed costs (staff salaries and rent payments);
Lack of more modern equipment;
Less modern facilities;
Lack of resources to ensure transportation for patients referred to centers that can provide care.
To establish the center, the promoters had to incur debt. The initial plan was to repay the contracted debt first so that, in the second phase, we could focus on expanding our activities. Unfortunately, this did not happen as the country’s economic situation has affected the financial health of the center. Therefore, the expansion plan has been postponed, and we hope that the situation will improve. In our growth perspectives, we plan to purchase modern equipment to perform eye surgeries (trabeculectomy and phacoemulsification). Our plan is very ambitious; we want to have a center with equipment that is much more advanced than what the centers in Bujumbura and Gitega have. This means that people from other provinces will come to us for treatment. If this materializes, it could create economic benefits around the center. In addition to modernizing our equipment, this will require renovating our facilities and hiring additional staff.
